About this Product
Snow Cover estimates the percentage of each mapped cell covered by snow visible to the satellite. The current application presents dated products for the Calgary Forest Area, allowing users to compare conditions over time and inspect the observations behind each result.
The workflow uses VIIRS satellite observations from NASA's near-real-time data service. For each 375-metre grid cell, it selects the most recent suitable observation within the preceding 72 hours. Cloud-obscured or otherwise unsuitable observations are screened using the source product's quality information. Separate map categories identify conditions such as cloud, water and ice, low illumination, and locations without an eligible observation.
Products use NAD83 / 10TM Forest (EPSG:3400). The available downloads include the Snow Cover raster and supporting acquisition-time, imagery-age, source-satellite, quality, and product information where supplied for the selected release.
