Service: Burned Area Analysis
Burned Area Analysis
Demonstration replays of historical fires. Analyses of historical Alberta fires are published as demonstration replays. Choose a fire in the map workspace; each analysis is its own release, named by wildfire number and analysis date.
How an analysis is produced
- 1Hotspot eventVIIRS active-fire detections near the request are grouped in space and time into the fire's event; the event sets the analysis area, the date windows and the seed locations.
- 2Pre-fire baselineA cascade of pre-fire windows anchored to the season (previous year, recent weeks, two years back, previous autumn for spring fires); each 30 m cell takes the first window with a clear HLS observation.
- 3Burn classificationMedian pre-fire and minimum post-fire NBR give dNBR; burn is seeded near detections and grown through connected change that persists and fits the detection timing.
- 4Review and deliverablesClassified raster, perimeter and spot-fire shapefiles with review candidates, imagery for comparison, metadata and checksums; every polygon is flagged for analyst review.
Deliverables per analysis
- Classified raster: burned, observed not burned, not observed. 30 m, GeoTIFF, EPSG:3400.
- Perimeter polygon shapefile, with spot fires over 1 ha as separate polygons.
- Hectares of the perimeter and spot fires, from the delivered polygons.
- Metadata: image capture dates and times, satellites, resolution, processing and delivery times.
Turnaround targets (RFP item i)
- Single fire: within 24 hours of the request.
- Season batch: within 1 week.
These are contract targets, not demonstrated performance.
How a request is made
On request from Alberta Wildfire, priced per hectare. Each analysis is published as its own release, named by wildfire number and analysis date.
Where the first analysis will appear
Here, in the same map workspace as the daily services, with a fire picker instead of a date slider. The release layout the pipeline writes is documented in the project (docs/burned_area_release_layout.md).
